Required Literature for
Westward and Onward

At the beginning of each section of Westward and onward, you will the find the book lists that will help you focus on the unit themes. The required list includes books you must have in order to complete this unit study successfully.

REQUIRED LITERATURE (listed in unit order):

  • The Holy Bible
  • Streams to the River, River to the Sea, by Scott O'Dell
  • Lassie Come-Home, by Eric Knight
  • Justin Morgan Had a Horse, by Marguerite Henry
  • Carry On, Mr. Bowditch, by Jean Lee Latham
  • American Tall Tales, by Adrien Stoutenberg
  • Strawberry Girl, by Lois Lenski
  • Old Yeller, by Fred Gipson
  • A Gathering of Days, by Joan W. Blos
  • Caddie Woodlawn, by Carol Ryrie Brink
  • The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, by Mark Twain
  • By the Great Horn Spoon!, by Sid Fleischman
  • Bound for Oregon, by Jean Van Leeuwen

The "suggested books" lists at the beginning of each unit include those that you might want to try to find at your own library in order to have a well-rounded study. The purpose of this list is to give you ideas about which books you might choose, NOT to limit you to this list! These books are simply those that I found on my library shelves that applied to the unit themes. Your library may have books that are equally appropriate – or better! Choose the books that you and your family will enjoy and be able to use as learning tools!

These Literature books are not available through Learning Adventures. However, you may purchase them separately through Amazon.com by clicking on the links below. We receive credit for all purchases made from these links.
